The Riverside County Fairgrounds hosts various events year round including the world famous International Date Festival, music concerts, 4x4 monster truck rallies, rodeos and other special events. The Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival is held each February since 1947. The festival celebrates the annual date fruit crop of the Coachella Valley and features rides for guests of all ages, shows and exhibits.
The City of Indio hosts several events in the heart of the city each year. The Tamale Festival is held each December on the streets of Old Town Indio, celebrating one of the culinary deights of the region. The event holds the Guinness World Record as the largest tamale festival on record, with a 120,000 in attendance. The city also launched the annual “Indio Block Party” in 2014, featuring several showcase events celebrating the art, culture and music of Indio.
In 1993, a Pearl Jam concert was held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio. This is viewed by many as the “Birth” of the Indio music festivals. Six years later the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was created by concert promoter Goldenvoice. Since 2001, Coachella has been an annual event that has brought notable music acts to the desert, including: Prince, Paul McCartney, Radiohead, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, The Cure, Jay-Z, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many, many more. Coachella continues to draw large amounts of concertgoers to Indio. In 2007 Goldenvoice launched Stagecoach, a two-day country music festival held the weekend following the Coachella. Performers have included George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Luke Bryan and Kid Rock. These events have transformed Indio into the music capitol of the world for three weeks out of the year.
Indio has several major events centers, including the Fantasy Springs Special Events Center, The Empire Polo Club, and Indio Performing Arts Center. The venues feature live stage theater, music, comedy, and world class sporting events throughout the year. Stars of entertainment such as George Lopez, The Wayans Brothers, Wayne Newton, Terry Fator, and Whoopi Goldberg frequent the stages of Indio.
